Oooh, I love a perpetuity folly. The only aspect of perpetuities I’ve thought about recently, however, is whether the rule against perpetuities would apply to a trust for a very long-lived parrot. As one does. Well, as I do. Will keep an eye out for any interesting cases.
It all started when I was thinking about those weird non-charitable purpose trusts for animals, and I found one for a parrot. Also apocryphally there’s one for three goldfish, but I think that’s made up, because the more I dug, the more it was a case of “someone else said…”
Met Nubar a few times. He used to live just outside of Bletchley and would come into town in his chauffeur driven limousine which was, in fact, a London taxi cab. He was so fat by then that this was the only vehicle he could get in and out of. On a side street of the main drag in Bletchley was Fred’s junk shop and as an avid stamp collector I was a regular visitor because I could boxes of postcards and letters. Nubar was also a regular visitor to Fred’s although I don’t recall ever seeing him actually buy anything. He was well known likely so when he came in the store I would just say “hullo Mr. Gulbenkian, how are you?”. He would usually respond with just a hullo.
That’s fabulous! And yes, I read of his taxi-cab/limo and various other eccentric cars he designed. I couldn’t find a way to work them into the post. Anyway, just marvellous to get a personal tale of the man himself.
He always seemed a perfectly nice man, not just to me but to other people I knew who had met him locally. His first stop was always the main post office on Queensway in Bletchley where I also saw him a couple of times and he seemed quite happy to just chat to people.
That was fun. Any recent perpetuity follies?

Ha! A parrot in being is rather a stretch!

There I was thinking the law is boring but no.... Fascinating people and story.
It provides me with endless interest.
Do you know whether Nubar had any siblings?
Yes. He had a sister called Rita.
Definitely not a boring story.
