An excellent, thought-provoking piece, Katy. I actually wrote a lengthy comment but it seems to have gotten lost when I was trying to-read parts of your post. Shucks. I might try again tomorrow. Just so much, yes, the past, as someone we both know likes to opine, is a different country and we just have to leave it at that. Sometimes, but not always.

I am writing incidentally from Sai Gon where just yesterday I re-visited the Independence Palace and the day before the HCM City Museum. History lessons do not get much better.

Thank you. Also have visited Sai Gon and been down the Cu Chi tunnels, which is how I discovered (half way through a tunnel) that I am severely claustrophobic. Er, not a good moment to find out.

So, we have to remember—it’s important never to forget—but not treat it like it was yesterday (particularly if it didn’t actually happen to me, but to my ancestors). That was then, this is now. It is how I survive.

You may not be wise or good because you have suffered hardships. But you are wise and good nonetheless.

What an amazing life story to tell. "That was then, this is now" is a wise statement.
